As a tablet coating machine manufacturer with more than 50 years in pharmaceutical process equipment, Gansons designs the GansCoater® as a complete automatic tablet coating machine – not a retrofitted tablet coating pan machine.
What makes the GansCoater® different?
The GansCoater® tablet coating machine is not simply a coating pan with automation added. Every element of its engineering – from the patented Aeroflo® baffle geometry to the non-contact infrared tablet bed temperature measurement has been derived from decades of production-floor understanding and regulatory scrutiny. It is designed to make good coating inevitable, not dependent on operator skill.
How the GansCoater® tablet coating machine works
Tablet coating machine working follows a simple cycle:
- Tablets are loaded into the perforated coating pan, where the Aeroflo® baffles tumble the bed continuously while spray guns apply a fine, controlled mist of coating suspension.
- Heated, filtered drying air passes through the tablet bed via the directional air plenum, evaporating the solvent or aqueous carrier as it goes, while infrared sensors track bed temperature in real time.
- Because the GansCoater® is an automatic tablet coating machine, this entire spray-tumble-dry cycle runs on a locked recipe rather than manual operator adjustment.
Aeroflo® patented baffle system
The perforated Aeroflo® baffles are the defining engineering feature of the GansCoater® . Validated in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, the Aeroflo® design achieves:
- Spray losses below 5% - less suspension waste, lower operating cost per batch
- Zero dead zones - uniform tablet exposure to spray and drying air throughout the pan
- Tablet slippage eliminated - consistent tumbling motion regardless of batch load
- 30% less compressed air - compared to industry standard baffle designs
- A higher turndown ratio than the standard specified capacities can be achieved by installing optional “reduced baffles” upon request.

Interchangeable pan system
A single GansCoater® installation supports multiple batch sizes through an interchangeable pan design. Move from small development batches to full commercial production without acquiring multiple machines. Changeover is single-operator, tool-less, and achievable in under six minutes.
- R&D to commercial scale on one platform - 40g through 1200kg
- Six-minute single operator changeover - validated, tool-less pan exchange
- Large turndown ratio - flexible processing within each pan size
Precision spray and drying system
The GansCoater® spray system is engineered for uniform droplet size, wide spray coverage, and zero tablet bearding. The directional air plenum guides drying laminar air through the tablet bed for maximum drying efficiency. Non-contact infrared sensors measure tablet bed temperature continuously, providing real-time data without contamination risk.
- Anti-bearding spray nozzles - no elastomeric contact parts, easy maintenance, lower risk
- Infrared tablet bed thermometry - 10–300ms response time, non-contact measurement
- Directional air plenum - maximises drying efficiency per unit of energy input
- Ultrasonic nozzle-to-bed distance sensors can be integrated to monitor, validate, and optimise coating suspension utilisation while minimising spray drying losses.

Containment for potent compounds
The GansCoater® is available in OEB Level 5 containment configurations for the processing of highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs).
- Contained designs include fully closed charging, in-process sampling, and discharging systems - eliminating operator exposure at the highest-risk stages of the coating process.
- Isolation technology is integrated directly into the coating system architecture, not retrofitted.
- BIBO dust collector with HEPA H14 filter - DOP tested, DP monitored
- Full-face screening probes continuously monitor air from the inlet and/or exhaust HEPA filters, detecting any filter integrity breach and automatically initiating safety measures to isolate and protect the equipment, product, and process.
Automation and Control
The GansCoater® Tablet coating machine automation platform is purpose-built for pharmaceutical regulatory compliance – not adapted from a generic industrial control system. The system delivers:
- 21-CFR part 11 compliance for data integrity and storage, ALCOA+ compliant
- ALCOA+ data integrity - attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original, accurate and complete records
- Recipe driven operation - parameter-locked process control with role-based access

Frequently asked questions - GansCoater®
What are the common problems encountered in tablet coating?
Tablet coating processes frequently encounter challenges that can affect the quality of the finished product. Here are the common issues observed during tablet coating operations:
- Tablet Picking and Sticking
Film pulled away from tablet surface due to over-wetting, excessive film thickness, or inefficient drying.
- Erosion
Tablet surfaces erode during coating due to friable tablets, over-wetted tablet surface, inadequate drying, or lack of tablet surface strength
- Twinning
Tablets stick together, commonly in capsule shapes, caused by insufficient evaporation.
- Peeling and frosting
Coating peels off as sheets due to defects in coating solution, over wetting of tablet bed, high moisture content in the core
- Tablet Bridging
Coating fills in the letter or logo on the tablet.
Causes: Improper formulation, poor logo design, improper application of coating solution, improper atomization pressure, high percentage of solid in coating solution, figh coating viscosity
- Chipping
Tablet edges break due to high pan RPM, sharp edges of tablets, low spray rate, high mechanical stress on tablets.
- Orange Peel Effect
Coating resembles orange texture due to rapid drying or high viscosity.
- Colour Variation
Uneven color due to improper mixing, migration of dyes, uneven spray pattern, inefficient coating, migration of soluble dyes, plasticizers and other additives
- Roughness
Rough or gritty surface of tablets caused by Spray drying of coating solution, high pigment and polymer concentration.
When you should opt for interchangeable pans in a tablet coating machine?
One can opt for interchangeable pans in coating processes when flexibility is required for handling varying batch sizes. The GansCoater’s interchangeable pans allow quick changeovers, with less than 5 minutes of downtime, ensuring efficient processing for both small and large production runs. This feature supports a large turndown ratio, making it ideal for manufacturers needing versatile processing capabilities without extensive setup times.
What are the different types of tablet coating machines?
The two main types of tablet coating machines are perforated pan coaters, used for film and functional coating with high drying efficiency, and conventional (side-vented) pan coaters, typically used for sugar coating. The GansCoater® is a perforated pan design, available across 40+ models from feasibility batch to bulk production scale.
Is the GansCoater® compliant with FDA and cGMP requirements?
What types of tablet coating can the GansCoater® perform?
The GansCoater® tablet coating machine supports film coating, enteric coating, functional multi-layer coating, sugar coating, and active drug layering. The system is optimised for aqueous and solvent-based coating formulations across all solid dosage form types including tablets, capsules, minitablets and other solid forms >2mm size.
What is the price range for a tablet coating machine?
Tablet coating machine price depends primarily on batch capacity, containment level (standard vs. OEB Level 5 for HPAPIs), and automation specification. Because the GansCoater® spans 40 grams to 1.2 tonne batch sizes across 40+ models, pricing varies significantly by configuration — Contact Gansons for a specification-based quote.
Does the GansCoater® support HPAPI and OEB Level 5 processing?
Yes. Gansons offers OEB Level 5 containment configurations for the GansCoater®, including fully closed charging, in-process sampling, and discharging systems. These designs protect operators from exposure to highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) at every stage of the coating cycle.
